Women president for State BJP?

Written By Tanmoy Sarkar on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 | 5:22 AM

Senior women leaders in MP BJP are of opinion that time is ripe for the baton of State president to be passed over to a woman in State. Since the time of the Jana Sangh, the organisation is headed by men in the state and its time that the fairer sex had a chance, they feel.
They point out that BJP president Nitin Gadkari has implemented the one-third gender quota in the organisation for the first time, by inducting 40 women in the 121-member new national executive and appointing 13 women office-bearers. The BJP is set to elect its state unit president in the first week of April.
In its 2008 national council, presided by Gadkari’s predecessor Rajnath Singh, the BJP had adopted a resolution that earmarked one-third of all posts for women with the promise that it will be executed when a new team is constituted.
Leaders like National in-charge of BJP women’s wing Sumitra Mahajan, former minister Kusum Mehendale and State education minister Archana Chitnis are supporting the idea. Remains to be seen whether the idea could turn into reality.
